How to Tackle Combustible Dusts With Successful Dust Control Systems

Many solids processing companies have a serious potential for a dust explosion and may not even recognize the risks. If the dusts in your dust control system are combustible, you may be risking injury or damage from a dust explosion if those systems are not designed or operated in accordance with NFPA recommendations.

Combustible dust incidents resulting in fatalities can be avoided if available guidance such as NFPA 654 and other standards are followed.
To see what your risk might be, answer the following two questions. If you answer "yes" to these questions, your dust control system may be an explosion hazard.

1. Do you have combustible dusts?

If you don't know, read the "Combustible Dusts" section below.

2. Do you lack adequate conveying velocity in some or all branches of your dust control system?

Low velocity causes dust accumulation in the duct and the risk of fueling a dust explosion if ignited — a significant factor in several recent incidents. Typical dust control conveying velocities are in the range of 3,500 to 4,000 ft/min (17.5 to 20 m/sec).

City tops UN’s ‘green list’

AHMEDABAD: In 2003, Central Pollution Control Board gave Ahmedabad the ignominious tag of being the most polluted city in the country, with
dangerous levels of lead and sulphur found in the air.

Six years on, the city has turned around full circle. Ahmedabad, today, leads 15 other cities in the country, including Delhi, in promoting the theme of ‘Green Cities -Plan for the Planet’, initiated by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Another Gujarat city, Jamnagar is ranked seventh. In 2005, Ahmedabad signed the United Nations’ Urban Environmental Accord (UEA) with 16 other cities in the country to implement 29 agendas in seven years to protect precious natural resources. Ahmedabad has so far implemented 20 agendas, way ahead of other cities, according to a study by International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) for UNEP.

“For the first time, we are conducting a tree audit to verify aspects like survival rate of trees. Greening the city is top priority. We plan to plant two lakh saplings this year,” said IP Gautam, commissioner of AMC.

Among the measures that have been implemented in Ahmedabad are greenhouse gas reduction, establishing an Air Quality Index (AQI), putting in place systems for meeting 10% of the city’s energy needs through renewable resources, efforts to reduce electricity consumption, waste reduction, creating of environmentally beneficial jobs in slums and BRTS.

Feeder buses to hit roads soon

BANGALORE: Leave the car home, de-congest the roads and start warming up to travel in the feeder service of public transportation that's soon
going to take over the city roads.

In a prelude to Namma Metro that is likely to come to fruition by 2010-end, the government wants to prepare commuters -- especially the middle and higher middle classes, who are the targeted passengers of Metro -- to adapt to the bus system.

A fleet of 1,000 buses that will soon hit the roads, promises to be high-end, have last-mile connectivity, 24-hour information on a toll-free phone service to locate the bus, a dedicated public campaign and parking policy.

This bonanza comes with a bag of reforms in the urban transport sector. It is not for the lower middle-class but is funded with the objective of getting higher middle-class citizens who otherwise travel by car.

How it works: the feeder service is about travelling point-to-point in the buses to reach the Metro station and hop on to the train. Instead of people travelling to Metro stations by private vehicles, which will subsequently crowd up parking lots, it is aimed at using public transport entirely.

According to environment experts, this stimulus package of Rs 323 crore, given by the Union urban development ministry under JN-NURM to buy buses, can be one of the important tools in tackling urban air pollution. The Supreme Court's Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, that met with Pollution Control Board representatives from nine cities, focused on this measure.

Clean City With Green Cars

If we know that driving a car leads to more pollution than any other activity, it is also our responsibility to fix it. Of course, emissions from one car may be low. But add a hundred, a thousand, or a million cars and you suddenly have a serious pollution problem on hand.

This is where the Sharjah Public Transport Corporation’s decision to introduce gas-powered taxi and bus fleet gains significance. In addition to providing a green hue to the city by planting trees, Sharjah, the cultural hub of the Arab world has stepped up its efforts in making the emirate clean and green. Its decision to convert all 5,065 taxis to run on natural gas by the yearend is a major leap towards making the emirate eco-friendly. Since the past year, Dubai has been replacing its existing fleet of taxis with eco-friendly cars that run on hybrid engines. This indicates the RTA’s commitment towards the environment. Thus, Dubai has led the way in the promotion of sustainable public transport system, and the emirate can expect real time fuel efficiency with the use of hybrid cars.

When the efforts contribute to building a healthy nation in a healthier environment, the opportunity has to be captured. The taxis and buses to be introduced by Sharjah will prove to be further incentives to individuals to opt for such vehicles. Harmful chemicals produced during the combustion process in the engines and released as exhaust leads to air pollution. The harmful affects of air pollution need no elucidation. With ozone continuing to be a persistent urban air pollution problem, all vehicle emission control programmes have to emphasise on nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon reductions.

Also, limiting vehicle-generated carbon dioxide will be critical to a successful pollution control exercise.

Design of Constructed Wetland (Reedbeds)

Pacific Spectrum Environmental has designed constructed wetlands for several clients as well as for Nestle Philippines to provide a cheap but effective means of treating its wastewater. Reed beds or constructed wetlands are good solutions to significantly reduce the operational costs for treating wastewater but requires a significantly greater area to build. Thus, these systems are well suited for facilities that have large areas available. Another good use of reedbeds are in aesthetics as these systems utilize local plants species to remove pollutants from wastewater.
